The Snacking Hour

Do you know what the hardest part of trying to stay on track or lose weight is? 9:00 PM. That hour after the kids are in bed, when you are still finishing up some work, or relaxing in front of the tv, but feel like snacking. You have probably heard before how it’s “bad” to eat after 8pm or that eating right before bed isn’t good for your metabolism, so you try and eat nothing or choose an apple or some celery to much on.

Really though, it’s not eating late at night that’s bad, it’s what you are eating before bed and how it fits into your overall eating plan. Eating something before bed can actually be very beneficial for fat loss! Eating some protein in the evening will help your body stay in an anabolic state (fat burning, muscle preserving), which helps keep your metabolism boosted, so you can maintain as much lean muscle as possible while losing weight. This helps, because the more lean muscle you have, the more calories you burn every day, helping you to reach your goals much more quickly. Now if you are like me and don’t like eating grilled chicken that late at night as a snack, and would much rather have something to satisfy the sweet tooth, then a great option is to make a protein mug cake and get the best of both worlds there. Protein plus a sweet snack! Level-1 protein is a lean protein powder, not full of sugars and fillers, that doesn’t upset your stomach, and fills you up so you aren’t hungry before bed. I use it almost every night as a snack before bed, either as protein ice cream or protein mug cake and don’t go to bed feeling guilty for binging on handfuls of cookies or a giant bowl of ice cream. If this sounds like something you would benefit from, shoot me a message and I’ll share some more details with you! Here is the protein mug cake recipe if you are interested: 1 scoop Level-1 Milk Chocolate 1 tsp baking powder 2 Tbsp unsweetened vanilla almond milk Mix all 3 ingredients together and microwave for 30-40 seconds, depending on the cooking temperature. Throw a few dark chocolate chips in for some extra sweetness!
